Make Your Escape (Derby): The Signal

A fun game that took a little while to get going, with an interesting twist and a couple of real highlights. I wouldn’t rave about the experience but if you’re heading along to play Spellbound then it’s a fun game to play alongside.

Make Your Escape (Derby): Spellbound

A fun game, with pretty decorations and good puzzles. I can’t imagine what it would be like with the full ten people but, for the two of us, it was most definitely a rewarding experience and well worth the trip over to Derby.

Project Breakout (Brighouse, Yorkshire): Project Z

Outside the room After escaping from Project Breakout’s newest game, we had a short break in their waiting space before heading straight back inside to face Project Z, a post-apocalyptic zombie game that was the second game they created. Project Breakout (Brighouse, Yorkshire): The Dollmaker

In spite of the name and theme, The Dollmaker felt like a charming game to spend time in. The puzzles may have been standard tropes at times but they made good use of the theme and solid decoration to create an fun experience.

The Escapologist (Selby): Back from the Future

A game that was packed full of flawed puzzles. I can’t recommend it, which is a shame because it’s clear they’ve poured a lot of love into the experience, and each puzzle comes close to being impressive but sadly far too many of them end up being frustrating.

The Great Escape Game Leeds: Abducted

If you’re interested in playing a horror room, then this should be reasonably high up your list if you’re in the area. On the other hand, if you’re just after a normal experience, a flawed puzzle will really frustrate you at a critical point in the room.

GR8escape York: Spy School

Old school room with pretty much everything that entails. The decoration wasn’t engaging, the puzzles were OK but not super exciting, and the story was minimal. For new players it will be fun and they won’t particularly notice the rough edges. For experienced players, I think it’s worth heading elsewhere.

GR8escape York: Space Cadet

This was a feelgood room with plenty of puzzles, some of which were reasonably challenging although it’s unlikely to win prizes for decor. It’s definitely a decent challenge – keeping our experienced team of four fully occupied for a fair chunk of the allotted time.

City Mazes (London): The Lost Cabin

This game had some promise but was let down by the lack of attention to detail and a use of tech that took more away from the game than it added. Remove the tech and tighten up some of the solutions, and I think you may get a solid game. However, as it is, I’d head elsewhere in London where there are plenty of better games.

City Mazes (London): Bamboozled

A game that delivers an acceptable quality on all fronts while never really managing to do well on any of them. It isn’t a game that you’re going to travel across the city for but, if you do head along, I don’t think you’ll hate it either.
